In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Smailholm like this:

Smailholm, par. and vil., Roxburghshire, on Eden Water - par., 4194 ac., pop. 446; vil., 6 miles NW. of Kelso; P.O.; the ruin of Smailholm Tower, on Sandyknowe Crags, is 1½ mile SW. of the vil. See SANDYKNOWE CRAGS.
