In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Dalmellington like this:

Dalmellington, par. and vil. with ry. terminus, in co. and 15½ miles SE. of Ayr -- par., 17,783 ac., pop. 6383; vil., pop. 1437; P.O., T.O., 1 Bank; the vil. is very ancient, dating from the llth century; in the par. are numerous collieries and ironworks.
