In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Wemyss like this:

Wemyss, par., Fife, on Firth of Forth, 4732 ac., pop. 7307; contains Buckhaven and West Wemyss towns, and East Wemyss vil.; the par. gives the title of earl to a branch of the family of Douglas; the church is at East Wemyss.
