In 1887, John Bartholomew's Gazetteer of the British Isles described Llanfrechfa Upper like this:

Upper Llanfrechva, township, Llanfrechva par., Monmouthshire, 2½ miles NW. of Caerleon and 4 N. of Newport, 2656 ac., pop. 4177; P.O., called Llanfrechfa; is a local government district. See LLANVRECHVA.
