In 1870-72, John Marius Wilson's Imperial Gazetteer of England and Wales described Langley Priory like this:

LANGLEY PRIORY, an extra-parochial tract in the district of Shardlow and county of Leicester; 3 miles SSW of Castle-Donington. Acres, 660. Pop., 11. House, 1. A Benedictine priory was founded here, in the time of Henry II., by William Pantulf; and given, at the dissolution, to the Greys. A mansion on its site, and called Langley Priory, is the seat of Charles Shakespear, Esq.
