Sources:

  1. This is a full transcription of Table 3 in the County Reports of the 1951 census, "Acreage, population, private households and dwellings - Administrative County, County Boroughs, Municipal Boroughs, Urban Districts, Rural Districts, Wards and Civil Parishes".
  2. The printed table does not include footnotes.

Notes:

  1. These data were input by the Centre for Data Digitisation and Analysis at the Queen's University of Belfast.
  2. This table was originally called par_1951 and was a combination of the English and Welsh data. This was amended in February 2010 and is now called par_1951_ew to reflect more accurately the area covered by the content.
  3. As yet these data do not contain ward ID numbers because they have not been inserted into the AUO

Checking:

  1. This dataset has been verified in a number of ways. All numeric fields, with the exception of pop_den, den_occ and den_2up have been checked by summing the OCR'd data and comparing the sums with sums provided in the original report. Remaining numeric fields were verified using cross checks.
  2. There were further checks of the numeric data after loading to ensure accuracy. The reported population totals were compared against the sum of the male and female populations. Swadlincote ward in Swadlincote parish in Swadlincote UD in Derbyshire, Framingham Pigot parish in Forehow and Henstead RD in Norfolk and Middlezoy parish in Bridgwater RD in Somerset were the only mismatches unable to be resolved. The Norfolk error needs confirming as the copy is unreadable.
  3. The district names, types and number per county were checked against the age_lgd table for 1951 and hcond_1951 for consistency. Only the new towns of Cwmbran in Monmouthshire and Corby in Northamptonshire were flagged, this is because they have two sets of figures in the hcond_1951 table, one for the UD and one for the new town.
  4. The reported population density was confirmed against total population divided by area. The remaining mismatches unable to be resolved are Marbury parish, Northwich RD, Cheshire, St Michael Rural parish, St. Albans RD, Hertfordshire, Stanwell ward in Stanwell parish, Staines UD and Tokyngton ward in Wembley parish, Wembley MB, both in Middlesex and Thornton in Craven parish, Skipton RD in Yorkshire West Riding. Those with a very small area that mismatched are both in Yorkshire East Riding, they are Bull Fort in Holderness RD and Albert ward in Sculcoates parish in Kingston upon Hull CB. The ward of Farringdon without in Land common to inner and middle temples in the City of London CC also mismatched but this is probably due to the shared information with the parishes of Inner and Middle Temples in the original table.
  5. The reported occupation density was compared against total population divided by room occupancy. Those districts with zero areas were checked to be accurate.
  6. The reported housing density was compared against the total population divided by the number of rooms occupied. Bocking North ward in Braintree and Bocking parish in Braintree and Bocking UD in Essex, Tidenham parish in Lydney RD in Gloucestershire and Billingley parish in Hemsworth RD in Yorkshire West Riding were the remaining mismatches unable to be resolved. The last of these needs confirming as the copy is unreadable.
  7. The geographical units have been cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer to ensure that all units are correctly identified. The unit names and types have been standardised. Each unit has a unique unit ID assigned to it and this can be used to cross-reference against other data-sets.
