Sources:

  1. Holds a full transcription of the parish-level table - Table 2. - Area, Houses and Population of Registration Districts and Sub-Districts and of their constituent Civil Parishes from the 1891 census volume Population. Registration areas and sanitary districts, England and Wales. Vol. II, 1891.
  2. This table contains a full transcription of the source table.
  3. The printed table does not include footnotes.
  4. The structure of this table largely follows that of the printed table with the exception of locational alpha data which has been reorganised.

Notes:

  1. These data were input by the Centre for Data Digitisation and Analysis at Queen's University, Belfast. Extensive additional checking and correcting was undertaken by Humphrey Southall in November 2003.

Checking:

  1. CDDA described their error checking as follows: 'ALL numeric data were checked by summing and comparing the sums with summary registration county data contained in the original table'.
  2. In 2003, the total populations for 1881 and 1891 were re-checked against the totals for males and females in each year. All inconsistencies have been eliminated.
  3. In 2003, the total 1891 population for each Registration District was compared with the total given in the 1891 Registration District age structure table. All such populations now match, so there are no missing or duplicated rows.
  4. The geographical units have been cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer to ensure that all units are correctly identified down to parish level. The unit names and types have been standardised. Each unit has a unique unit ID assigned to it and this can be used to cross-reference against other data-sets. The following sub-districts were specially matched because although they are listed in the 1891 Census, they were not listed as officially created until 1892;
    • Stokenchurch SubD, Marlow SubD, and Wycombe SubD all in Wycombe RegD, Buckinghamshire
    • Bebington SubD in Wirral RegD Cheshire
    • Mildenhall SubD in Mildenhall RegD, Suffolk
    • Worcester SubD in Worcester RegD, Worcestershire
  5. Where the administrative county differs from the Registration county this is given in brackets after the parish name. These rows are matched to the AUO. The exceptions are Bramshott and Horsmonden, both given as partly in Sussex. However, Sussex is not defined as an administrative county, and we currently have no other corroborating evidence of this relationship in the AUO so we cannot match these two rows to either East Sussex or West Sussex. In addition there are 39 parishes identified as being in Lincolnshire, which is not defined as an administrative county. These rows have had additional manual matching to the different Lincolnshire Parts counties (Lindsey, Holland and Kesteven) in the AUO.
  6. The sub-parish units are mostly Colleges in Oxford and Cambridge. These have all been matched to the AUO. Additionally there are two military camps and seven other distinguished areas none of which are currently in the AUO.
