Table ID:
IND_1951_LG_T     (1251021)
Contents:
Industry statistics for counties and large towns in England and Wales for 1951
Approx. number of rows:
49,447
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Humphrey Southall
Geography:
Reporting units are identified by:
   Administrative County
   Local Government District
   Local Government District Type
Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1951.

Sources:

  1. The data were transcribed from Table 2, 'INDUSTRIES (Minimum List) and Status Aggregates, OCCUPIED MALES and FEMALES aged 15 and over' for 'Conurbations, Administrative Counties, County Boroughs, Metropolitan Boroughs and Urban Areas with 50,000 Population or more', pp. 12-113 in Census 1951: England and Wales: Industry Tables (London: HMSO, 1957). The national totals came from Table 1, 'INDUSTRIES (Full list) and Status Aggregates, Occupied Males and Females aged 15 and over', pp2-10.
  2. This is a full transcription of all numerical data in the table for county totals and all individual districts. We therefore exclude data for (a) "Conurbations", which are defined as ad hoc aggregates of local government districts; (b) totals for Administrative Counties excluding associated County Boroughs, where a total including them is available; and (c) the aggregate of all County Boroughs within a county. Obviously, all of these excluded data can be computed from what is held here.
  3. This table is mainly the product of work by Humphrey Southall in spring 2015, using Finreader OCR software. However, it began as a more limited transcription by Valentijn Bilsen, formerly of the Department of Applied Economics, University of Cambridge, and supplied to us via Danny Dorling. This latter transcription was restricted to data for towns but not county totals, and to the 'Status Aggregates' and the totals for the Orders. The figures for the Orders were generally replaced by OCR output, but many of the 'Status Aggregates' were not overwritten. However, tracking which exact values remain from Bilsen's transcription would be too complex: they are a small part of the whole. Harold Price entered the national figures in Portsmouth in March 2017.

Notes:

  1. The county totals held here always include any associated County Boroughs, and the figures for the West Riding include the City of York. National totals were not originally included, but were later added to ensure redistricted data figures could be easily checked.
  2. The notes in the original report state: 'The figures relate to persons working in each area. Persons with unstated or ill-defined industry are included in the total but not in the figures for any order.' The introduction to this report notes (p. ix) that the table is based on place of work, like the 1921 table but unlike the 1931 table. If no place of work was specified, people were tabulated based on their place of residence.
  3. When the data were loaded into the database, rows that were empty because they came from the original restricted transcription project were eliminated, and then all remaining null values were replaced by zero.

Checking:

  1. As the data were input, these checks were made:
    • That the sum of the "Status Aggregates" matched "Total - All industries".
    • That the sum of the Order totals matched "Total - All industries".
    • That the sum of the individual categories matched the listed total for each Order.
This left four rows of information which could not be check-summed: "Married women" and three groups "included in Operatives", i.e. "Articled clerks and apprentices", "Part-time workers" and "Unpaid assistants".
  2. Additional checks were made when the data were loaded into the database by summing districts, both large and small, and comparing the results with reported county totals. With the exception of London, which contained no 'small' districts, this could be done only for values that appeared in the 'small' table, or rows here that summed to such values. However, this does cover all four rows noted above as not being covered by check sums.
  3. In the following cases, a value was 'corrected' even though it had been transcribed correctly from the printed table, because the transcribed value produced errors in both column check-sums, within the particular district, and the industry check-sums across the districts:
    • London: The figure for '241. Dealing in other industrial materials' for females in Bermondsey MetB was printed as 502 but corrected to 255.
    • Wiltshire: the figure for '73. Wireless apparatus and gramophones' for males in Swindon MB was printed as 1 but corrected to 1,849.
    • West Riding: the figure for '200. Building' for females in Bradford CB was printed as 49 but corrected to 149, to fit in with (a) the overall total for 'Building and Contracting' and (b) the total for the county with County Boroughs, deducting the sum of the County Boroughs and the listed total for the county without the CBs.

Columns within table:

ColumnTypeContents
col_seq Integer number. Number placing units in the order in which they appear in the original table. This is added by us as the data are loaded, so the value for a given area will change as additional data are loaded.
nation Text string (max.len.=6). Single-character code for nation: 'E' = England, 'W' = Wales, 'EW' = England and Wales
admc_name Text string (max.len.=42). Name of the Administrative County as listed in the report.
adm_cnty Text string (max.len.=42). Standardised name of the Administrative County, partly to match names in table for small towns.
lg_name Text string (max.len.=68). Name of unit as originally listed in the report. County totals have this set to '[TOTAL]'.
lg_dist Text string (max.len.=36). Cleaned version of the unit name.
lg_type Text string (max.len.=8). Type of local government unit. These include 'AC' = 'Administrative County' and 'ACB' = 'Administrative County with associated County Borough(s)'.
admc_unit Integer number. ID number of the Administrative County containing the local government district, as defined in the GBHGIS AUO.
g_unit Integer number. ID number of the local government district, as defined in the GBHGIS AUO.
ew_row Integer number. Sequence number identifying the different rows for each unit, and placing them in the correct order. Called 'ew_row' because the Scottish industry table has a different order.
industry Text string (max.len.=64). Label identifying the row, as printed in the original report. These are a mixture of Order names, more detailed categories and the "Status Aggregates" at the top of the table, so for more systematic analysis this table should be linked to the ind_1951_codebook table, which also has an ew_row column.
males Integer number. Number of males employed.
females Integer number. Number of females employed.
