Contents:
1961 Educational Statistics in England and Wales (age at termination of education)
Approx. number of rows:
2,936
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Paula Aucott
Geography:
Reporting units are identified by:
   Administrative County
   Local Government District
   Local Government District Type
Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1961.

Sources:

  1. The data are taken from table 4, 'Population aged 25 and over by 7 Terminal Age groups' for 'Counties, Local Authority Areas, Conurbation Centres, New Towns (10 per cent sample)' (pp.67-111) in the Education Tables volume of the 1961 census reports.
  2. National totals for England and Wales have been added from Table 1, "Population 15 and over in 9 age sections classified by 16 Terminal Education Age groups", on page 1 of the same report. This goes into more detail, so terminal age groups were merged to match those used in table 4, and numbers aged 15-19 and 20-24 were deducted from the totals aged 15 and over to compute numbers aged 25 and over. Despite this complication, the computed sum of all_ages for all districts exactly matches the reported England and Wales figure for women, and differs by 1 for men.

Notes:

  1. These data are from a 10% sample of all households.
  2. Unlike the 1951 data, these data cover both sexes, with two rows for each district distinguished by the 'sex' column.
  3. This data covers only England and Wales.
  4. This table was originally called edu_1961. It was amended in January 2010 to be edu_1961_ew to reflect more accurately the area covered by the content
  5. The value of cnty_unit is set for all rows except the national total. The national total row has both adm_cnty and lg_dist set to 'ENGLAND AND WALES', cnty_unit set to null, and g_unit set to the ID number for England and Wales.

Checking:

  1. The data were checked to ensure that the figures for the total population aged over 25 equalled the total for all terminal ages plus the number not stated; and that the individual terminal ages summed to the total for all terminal ages (see constraints below).
  2. The data have been cross-checked against the 1961 age structure data, to ensure that the districts listed are identical.
  3. As the data are for a 10% sample, exact matching with the age structure data is impossible. However, the total aged over 25 has been compared with the equivalent total in the age structure table divided by ten. All but two differences are either under 25 or less than 12.5% of the age total, and those two exceptions are correctly transcribed.
  4. When the file was transferred and modified to run on Postgres the geographical units were cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer (auo) to ensure that all units are correctly identified. Each unit has a unique unit ID assigned to it and this can be used to cross-reference against other datasets. The matching to the AUO is complete.
  5. This data set is now believed to be error free.
