Sources:

  1. 1851: All RDs in England and Wales (624 records in all). These data were transcribed from the tables entitled 'Ages of Males and Females enumerated March 31st, 1851 - in Districts' in each of the sets of divisional tables in Volume II, Part II of the 1851 Census Report, Ages, Civil Condition, Occupations, and Birth-Place of the People, BPP 1852-3 LXXXVIII. Data on the individual years under 5 is missing for 1851 because the original report did not tabulate it. National totals added from Table I, "Great Britain and the Islands in the British Seas", pp. cxcii-iii in Population Tables II, Vol. I., "Summary Tables: Ages of the People".
  2. 1861: All RDs in England and Wales (635 records in all). These data were transcribed from table 2 'Ages of Males and Females enumerated April 8th, 1861 - in Superintendent Registrars' Districts' in each of the sets of divisional tables of Volume II of the 1861 Census Report, Ages, Civil Condition, Occupations, and Birth-Places of the People, BPP 1863 LIII Pts. I and II [C.5597]. National totals added from Table I, "England and Wales. Ages of males and females enumerated April 8th, 1861, in counties", on pp. x-xi of Population tables. England and Wales. Vol. II. Part 1, 1861.
  3. 1871: All RDs in England and Wales (629 records in all). These data were transcribed from table 2, 'Ages of Males and Females enumerated April 3rd 1871 - in Superintendent Registrars' Districts' in each of the sets of divisional tables in Volume III of the 1871 Census Report, Population Abstracts. Ages, Civil Condition, Occupations and Birth-Places of the People, BPP 1873 LXXI, Part I, 1-. Data on numbers of children under 5 by individual years of age were added from table 4 in the same sets of divisional tables. National totals added from Table II, "Ages of males and females enumerated April 3rd, 1871, in divisions and registration or union counties", pp.xvi-ii in Population abstracts, England and Wales, 1871 Vol. III, Summary tables, Ages of the people.
  4. 1881: All RDs in England and Wales (630 records in all). These data were transcribed from table 2, 'Ages of Males and Females in Registration Districts' in each of the sets of divisional tables in Volume III of the 1881 Census Report, Ages, Condition as to Marriage, Occupations, and Birth Places of the People, BPP 1883 LXXX [C.3722]. National totals added from Table 1, "Ages of Males and Females enumerated in England and Wales", on page 3 of the same report.
  5. 1891: All RDs in England and Wales (633 records in all). These data were transcribed from table 2, 'Ages of Males and Females in Registration Districts' in each of the sets of divisional tables in Volume III of the 1891 Census Report, Ages, Condition as to Marriage, Occupations, Birth Places and Infirmities, BPP 1893-4 CVI [C.7058]. National totals added from Table I, "Ages of Males and Females in England and Wales, on p. v of the same report (i.e. within the introductory text).
  6. 1901: All RDs in England and Wales (636 records in all). These data are a slight simplification of the age bands used in the original report; the full transcript is stored as table 'age_reg_ew_1901'. They were transcribed from table 26, 'Ages of Persons, Males and Females in the Registration County, and in the Registration Districts, 1901' in each of the county reports of the 1901 Census.
  7. 1911: All RDs in England and Wales (635 records in all). These data were transcribed from table 11, 'Registration Counties and Registration Districts -Persons, Males and Females in each Registration County: Males and Females in each Registration District, at each year of age under 21 and in Quinquennial Age-Groups, 1911', pp.312-71 in Volume VII of the 1911 Census Report, Ages and Condition as to Marriage, BPP [Cd.6610]. National totals added from Table 1, "England and Wales. Condition as to marriage of persons, males and females, at each year of age and in quinquennial age groups, 1911", p. 1 in the same report.

Notes:

  1. NB This table has been assembled from information input in various places.
  2. While the data supplied by David Allan Gatley are currently subject to certain limitations on use, but we also have separate transcriptions made at QMW covering 1861 and 1871 for selected counties in East Anglia (Suffolk, Norfolk and Cambridgeshire), the East Midlands (Lincolnshire, Nottingham and Derbyshire), Yorkshire (the East and West Ridings) and the North West (Cheshire and Lancashire). Graham Mooney has supplied 1851, 1861 and 1871 data covering the County of London.
  3. The 1901 national totals and 1851 individual years under five are missing.

Checking:

  1. The data have been checked to confirm that the totals for men and for women equal the sum of the respective age categories.
  2. Adding the data for under 5s retrospectively served as an effective check that no rows of data had been completely missed.
  3. The geographical units have been cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer to ensure that all units are correctly identified. The unit names and types have been standardised. Each unit has a unique unit ID assigned to it and this can be used to cross-reference against other data-sets.
