Sources:

  1. This is a full transcription of the 1881 parish-level table: Table 4. 'Area, Houses, and Population of Civil parishes in the several Registration Sub-Districts in 1871 and 1881' from the Census of England and Wales 1881, Volume II. Area, Houses and Population. Registration Counties.
  2. The printed table does not include footnotes.

Notes:

  1. These data were input by the Centre for Data Digitisation and Analysis at the Queen's University Belfast. Additional checking and cleaning work was carried out by Humphrey Southall in May 2002.
  2. The following data values have been changed from those printed in the original reports to achieve greater consistency:
    • The 1871 female population of Chichester Bartholomew CP, in Chichester RD, Sussex, was listed as 16 but was changed to 216 to correspond with the male and total populations, and the total 1871 female population for the district as listed in the 1881 inter-censal change table.
    • The 1871 male population of Sunningwell CP, Abingdon SubD, Abingdon RD, Berkshire, was listed as 175 but was changed to 173 to correspond with the female and total populations, and the total 1871 male population for the district as listed in the 1881 inter-censal change table.
    • The 1871 female population of Weston Favell CP, in St. Giles SubD, Northampton RD, Northants, was listed as 76 but was changed to 276 to correspond with the male and total populations, and the total female population for the sub-district as listed in the sub-district age structure table.
    • The 1881 total population of Lastingham CP, in Lastingham SubD, Pickering RD, North Riding, was listed as 84 but was changed to 184 to fit in with both the male and female figures for the village and the district-level totals in the age structure tables.
  3. The metropolitan counties of Middlesex, Surrey and Kent which were part of the Division of London have had their registration counties amended in the data to be called 'LONDON' for ease of identification.

Checking:

  1. Rows were checked for the internal consistency of the 1871 and 1881 population data; see constraints below. NB the data on area and houses have not been checked.
  2. Total 1881 populations for Registration Districts were checked against the equivalent totals in 'age_reg', and all now match.
  3. Total 1881 populations for Registration sub-Districts were checked against the equivalent totals in 'age_sub', and all now match.
  4. The geographical units have been cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer to ensure that all units are correctly identified. The unit names and types have been standardised. Each unit has a unique unit ID assigned to it and this can be used to cross-reference against other data-sets.
