Sources:

  1. These data were transcribed from 'Table 5: Registration Counties, Districts and sub-Districts with their Constituent Civil Parishes -- Urban or Rural District in which Parish is situated; Area; Families or Separate Occupiers, and Population 1901 and 1911; and population enumerated in institutions, large establishments, and on vessels, etc. 1911.' in: Census of England and Wales. 1911. Area, Families or Separate Occupiers, and Population. Vol. II: Registration Areas [Cd. 6259] (London: HMSO, 1912). The table occupies pp. 8-373.
  2. The original table is organised by Registration county, District and sub-District, but lists for each parish the local government district it was in. The name of the corresponding Administrative County has been added for the database.
  3. These data were manually input by Eileen Longland at Queen Mary and Westfield College in 1997. NB while other parish-level tables in the database contain parish names originally copied from another parish table input earlier and then tailored to fit, this transcription was done from scratch. This transcription is also unusual in including all the footnotes from the published table. NB 56 footnotes are currently incomplete due to parts being missed off our photocopies. This work was funded by the Leverhulme Trust, as part of the construction of the 1881 GIS.
  4. This table is a direct copy of the 'par_1911_clean' table held within GBHDB on the Vision server in Edinburgh, taken on 16/4/09, which appears to include additional cleaning work which has gone missing from the versions on the Tiger server in Portsmouth.

Notes:

  1. Original Note 1: "Registration Districts are co-extensive with Poor Law Unions or Parishes of the same names with the exception of the Registration Districts of Fulham (3), Winchester (103), Royston (135), Hatfield (138), Dorchester (264), Hereford (337), Wolverhampton (369), Chester (450), and Helmsley (531), each of which comprises two Poor Law Unions or Parishes."
  2. Original Note 2: "Where the name of the Administrative County in which a parish is situated differs from that of the Registration County, the name of the former is added in italics in Column 1; the difference between Registration Counties and Administrative Counties are shown in Table 7."
  3. Original Note 3: "In all Counties, Districts and sub-Districts marked + changes were made in boundaries between the Census of 1901 and that of 1911." In our transcription, this is shown by a 'Y' in the 'change' column."
  4. Original Note 4: "The places named in footnotes as being included in Civil Parishes are localities having no defined boundaries such as hamlets, villages, etc. In many cases names applied to localities serve also as the names of Ecclesiastical Parishes, Wards, etc. In all cases of alteration of boundary between the Censuses of 1901 and 1911, the figures both for 1901 and 1911 relate to the new areas. Particulars of alterations in Registration Districts are given in Table 6, and of alterations in Civil Parishes in Table 13, Vol.1. For particulars of alterations in Registration sub-Districts reference should be made to the Registrar-General's Annual Reports."
  5. Original Note 5: "The figures in Column 11 [Population of Institutions, Large Establishments, Vessels, etc] represent the population enumerated in:- (a) In Military and Naval Barracks, Hospitals, Lunatic Asylums, Prisons and Certified Reformatory and Industrial Schools (see Tables 17 and 20, Vol. I); (b) In other Establishments, including private households, of which the number of inmates exceeded 15; (c) On board Vessels (see Table 21, Vol. I); (d) In Barns, Sheds, Caravans, etc., or in the Open Air (see Table 22, Vol. I)."
  6. Original Note 6: "The figures in Columns 4 [No. of 1901 families or separate occupiers], 5 [No. of 1911 families or separate occupiers] and 10 [No. of Institutions, etc.] correspond to the total number of schedules collected. If the entries in Columns 10 and 11 be deducted from those in Columns 5 and 7 respectively, the resulting figures, relating as they do, exclusively to "families" each containing no more than 15 persons may be taken as a rough indication of the number of private families and of persons comprising such families. A closer approximation to the number of private families in the larger areas will be found in the Tables referring to Tenements, to be published in a later volume."
  7. Original Note 7: "In the Report on the Census of 1901, the corresponding Table is numbered 12 in the several County Volumes."
  8. Besides footnotes naming localities (see note 4) they also contain explanations of parishes showing rapid growth. An example of these kind of notes given for the parish of Toton, Nottinghamshire is: "including part of Attenborough, Draycott and Church Wilne. The large increase in the pop. of this CP is attributed mainly to the development of the lace-making industry".
  9. The published table listed combined acreages for the following parishes, but we have included (currently crude) estimates for the individual parishes:
    • Saxlingham Nethergate and Saxlingham Thorpe in Henstead Reg.D., Norfolk (pro rata to population);
    • Bainbridge, Hawes, and "Mossdale Moor and Wether Fell", land common to the two parishes, in Aysgarth Reg.D., North Yorkshire (total acreage divided into three equal parts, which changed the acreages of Askrigg and Hawes sub-Districts);
    • High Abbotside, Low Abbotside and "Abbotside Common", land common to the two parishes, in Aysgarth Reg.D., North Yorkshire (total acreage divided into three equal parts).
  10. The published numbers of families in 1901 for Bradfield and Bucklebury Civil Parishes, in Bradfield Reg.D., Berkshire, have both been raised by 200 as this makes them consistent with the sub-District totals and seems more likely given the 1911 family totals and the 1901-11 population trends.
  11. "The Moot Hall and precincts" in Newcastle is stated to be part of neither the City of Newcastle nor any rural district, but has been assigned to Tynemouth RD here because it was so included in other 1911 tables. Cardigan Island in Cardigan sub-District, Cardiganshire, and Puffin Island in Beaumaris sub-District, Anglesey/Carnarvonshire, are both extra-parochial units that are clearly shown as not being part of any local government district. However, they had no population so this does not affect check-sums.
  12. Fairfield Civil Parish in Chapel-en-le-Frith Reg.D., Derbyshire, appears as a single row in the original report which was in both Buxton UD and Fairfield UD. Additional data was taken from table 10 in volume 1 of the report to create two separate rows covering the parts of the parish in each local government district.
  13. There is a problem with matching both Anglesey administrative county and Cardiganshire administrative county in the par_1911_ew table to the age_lgd table, although the problem has yet to be determined.

Checking:

  1. The only single-row check possible is that the numbers of males and females in 1911 sum to the total population.
  2. Additional rows giving sub-totals for Registration Counties, Registration Districts and Registration sub-Districts were included in the transcription, although they have been removed from the final table. For the following columns, sub-District totals were computed from the parish/ward-level data and compared with the published totals: area, 1901 families, 1911 families, 1901 population, 1911 population, 1911 males and 1911 females. The institutional figures have yet to be checked because some values are missing.
  3. Total 1911 populations were computed for each Registration District and compared with the populations given in 'age_reg'.
  4. Male and female 1911 populations were computed for each local government district and compared with the totals given in 'age_lgd'.
  5. Following these checks, the numerical data that have been checked are error-free. The names of both registration and administrative units match those in other 1911 tables. The names of parishes and wards have not been checked. There may be problems in the institutional figures (see above).
  6. The geographical units have been cross-checked against the GBHGIS administrative unit gazetteer to ensure that all units are correctly identified. Each unit has a unique unit ID assigned to it and this can be used to cross-reference against other data-sets.
