Contents:
Parish-level data from the 1831 census, including occupations
Approx. number of rows:
15,929
Table type:
Raw Data
Documentation Author:
Humphrey Southall
Geography:
Reporting units are identified by:
   Ancient County
   Ancient district: Hundreds, etc.
   Type of Ancient District
   Ancient Parish
   Parish- or sub-Parish-level Unit
   Original name of parish-level unit
Chronology:
The data are for the single year 1831.

Sources:

  1. The data originally appeared as the main tabulation in each of the county sections in the two volumes of the 1831 Enumeration Abstract.
  2. This table is notable in that identical statistical data were reported for parishes in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Column names have been harmonised across our separate transcriptions.

Notes:

  1. This table is notable firstly as the most systematic census listing of the 'ancient' administrative geography that existed prior to the introduction of the system of Registration Districts in 1837, and secondly as the most geographical detailed listing of occupational statistics published by a census for England and Wales. However, it should be noted that this was also the last census to be conducted by sending a form to parish priests, so the reliablity of the occupational and other statistics is open to question.
  2. The 1831 Census records Beaminster Forum and Redhone hundred as a single hundred in the Bridport Division in Dorset. However, Youngs' and other sources disagree and state this was actually two separate administrative units, Beaminster hundred, and Beaminster Forum and Redhone hundred. This digital transcription of the table has been corrected to reflect this, but in the original table all parishes we now label as within either one of these hundreds were described as within Beaminster Forum and Redhone hundred.
  3. Five rows are recorded as 'Boroughs'. These have been matched to ancient boroughs (district level units) because each contained multiple parishes. They are: Reading (Berkshire), Wallingford (Berkshire), Windsor (Berkshire), Penryn (Cornwall) and Taunton (Somerset). N.B. There is currently no legal relationships between Boroughs and Hundreds in our AUO structure.

Checking:

  1. A start has been made on matching the table to the AUO, and significant effort has gone into matching districts and parish-level units through corrections to both the AUO and this table, as well as addition of variant names from the table. A considerable amount of further work is needed to ensure all sub-parish level units are matched to the AUO.
  2. Only one district-level unit is not matched. This is Lewes Hundred in Sussex which has no statistics and no evidence of its existence elsewhere.
  3. Ten parish-level units have not matched, including one 'Borough' linked to the unmatched district above. The remainder are workhouses and/or hospitals located in the East of England. None of these entries have any statistics associated with them.
  4. The total number of families should equal the sum of the three types of family. 9 rows currently fail this check.
  5. The total population should equal the sum of males and females. 2 rows currently fail this check.
  6. The total number of males over 20 should equal the sum of the 9 categories of occupied males over 20. 33 rows currently fail this check.
