NEATH CANAL, a canal in Glamorgan; from Briton-Ferry harbour at the mouth of the river Neath, 13 milesup the valley of the Neath to the neighbourhood of Aberpergwm. It was formed in 1791; has sixteen locks; and is connected by railway, at the upper end, with Hirwain and Aberdare, and with the Cardiff canal. Abranch canal goes from it at Aberdulais, 2½ miles above Neath, to Port-Tennant near Swansea; and was formed in 1822.
