Dean, Forest of, ancient forest, W. Gloucestershire, between rivers Severn and Wye, 20 miles long N. and S., and 10 miles broad E. and W.; was at one time an oak forest of considerable importance, and yielded vast supplies of navy-timber, but is now mainly covered with coppices grown for the sake of the bark. The Forest of Dean possesses an entire coalfield.
