Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Newtown

Newtown, vil., Calbourne par., and eccl. dist., partly also in Shalfleet par., Isle of Wight - dist., pop. 356; the vil. is on Newtown Bay, 1 mile SW. of the Solent and 4 miles E. of Yarmouth; it is an ancient place, was at one time a town of some importance, and from the time of Elizabeth till 1832 sent 2 members to Parliament.
