Descriptive Gazetteer Entry for Nith

Nith, river; rises in SW. of New Cumnock par., Ayrshire, and flows 9 miles NE. to New Cumnock, and thence 70 miles SE. through Nithsdale, Dumfriesshire, to the Solway Firth 14 miles below the town of Dumfries, to which it is tidal and navigable; it divides Dumfriesshire from Kirkcudbrightshire during the last 16 miles of its course.
