nCube : Decennial Cause of Death by Age for under 5s

nCubes hold all the statistics presented by the Vision of Britain system, and are defined as combinations of variables. For example, the age-sex tables that appear in most census reports are held as two-dimensional nCubes in which one dimension is a variable categorising sex and the other variable defines a set of age groups. nCubes can have many dimensions, such as age by sex by occupation by cause of death, or just one.

The Registrar General's Decennial Supplements provided extremely detailed information on causes of death between 1851-60 and 1901-10, but unfortunately used five different classifications of cause of death to cover those six decades. Graham Mooney, of Johns Hopkins University, has therefore defined a simplified cause of death classification to which we have converted the original data. Inevitably, many causes have had to be grouped into an enlarged 'other' category, but we are still able to consistently identify the main epidemic diseases. This nCube presents the more detailed information for children under 5, although in order to include all decades we have had to ignore gender and combine ages 2 to 4 into a single category.

Decennial Cause of Death by Age for under 5s: Data map listing

Each of our datasets, or nCubes, combines one or more variables (Var) each of which consists of a set of categories. The data map lists all the possible combinations of categories. The cell references are the identifiers held in our main table of statistics, recording what each number measures.
