nCube : Acreages of different crops, as reported by the 1961 Scottish Agricultural Census

nCubes hold all the statistics presented by the Vision of Britain system, and are defined as combinations of variables. For example, the age-sex tables that appear in most census reports are held as two-dimensional nCubes in which one dimension is a variable categorising sex and the other variable defines a set of age groups. nCubes can have many dimensions, such as age by sex by occupation by cause of death, or just one.

The Scottish Agricultural Census for 1961 used this set of crops, different from those listed for England and Wales, in its main tabulation by county. One key difference was that grassland was divided into areas under and over 7 years old, rather than into 'rotation' and 'permanent', but we treat grassland under 7 years old as equivalent to 'rotation' and therefore include it with other arable crops. The same table also listed the 'total area of orchards', but orchards area included here according to what was growing beneath the trees.
