Q: Why doesn't the system know about the place I am interested in?

A: We hold very systematic information about administrative units, like counties and districts and parishes, and that means we also know about the "places", generally towns and villages, which gave them their names. However, our information about other kinds of "places", like localities, hamlets and parts of towns, is less systematic. Before you give up on us, it is worth trying our expert search options, and especially our descriptive gazetteer searching.
